nano-ASTADopa is a collaborative research initiative with Dr. Nadja Henke to create a nanoformulated astaxanthin–polydopamine nanoformulation that improves stability, bioavailability, and controlled release of a natural compound for chronic inflammatory disease therapy—initially focused on multiple sclerosis (MS), which affects women at roughly three times the rate of men.
Current MS medications are expensive, often have severe side effects, and limit patient adherence and access to care, disproportionately worsening outcomes for underserved communities. By combining microbial-based astaxanthin with advanced materials engineering, this project aims to develop a safer, more cost-effective, and socially impactful disease-modifying therapy for MS and beyond.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects an estimated 13 million people worldwide each year, contributing to high morbidity, mortality, and immense healthcare costs. Our dedicated team is working on two unique biosensor platforms based on synthetic receptors—one for personalized diagnostics and point-of-care testing, and another for bedside monitoring. By providing rapid, accurate AKI diagnoses in both clinical and resource-limited settings, we aim to improve patient outcomes, increase access to treatment, and address global disparities in kidney health.
Hydrogels offer extraordinary potential across healthcare applications—from precise drug delivery and advanced wound healing to diagnostics. By developing a real-time monitoring strategy for hydrogel formation, we could gain deeper insights into the dynamics of these versatile materials, enabling safer, more efficient, and accessible solutions that elevate patient care. Providing immediate, on-site feedback on hydrogel formation also reduces the need for specialized equipment and lengthy testing, lowering costs and simplifying implementation, ensuring that innovative hydrogel-based therapies can benefit everyone, regardless of resources.
